Startup Weekend Cambodia – FinTech Edition

Startup Weekend Cambodia has done a great job in 2016 by organized various edition of Startup Weekend in Phnom Penh city including General Edition, Women Edition and Education Tech Edition.

This year, 2017, the Startup Weekend Cambodia run new edition, it’s FinTech edition. The Startup Weekend FinTech will be held on 3-5 February, 2017 at TRYBE Space.

If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur with dreams of developing a startup that could leave a mark on Cambodia’s finance sector, then this Startup Weekend FinTech edition could just be the first step to leaving your legacy!

The event will be started on Friday evening where participants will individually pitch their own ideas for the FinTech industry (Financial Technology). After pitch the ideas, the 10 most viable concepts will be selected to be worked on for the next two days, with teams being formed as well.

On Saturday and Sunday, each team will also receive advice from experienced coaches and mentors to develop a business plan and design their prototypes. The mentors include Mr. Sophorth Khuon, the CEO and Co-founder of Morakot Technology, Ms  Celia Boyd, the founder of SHE Investments, Mr. James Wilson, Serial entrepreneur and Business Development Manager who has started numerous business around the world, Ms Maneth Pol, Business trainer and Facilitator at SHE Investments, Mr. David Wilkie, Founder of Somleng and Chibi and Co-Founder of Bongloy Payment Gateway, Mr. Sim Chankiriroth, Founder of BanhJi an online accounting system, Mr. Bora Kem, Investment Manager at Mekong Strategic Partners, Mr. Chanda Pen, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at SocialWallAsia (Mouypi Studio) and Bongloy Payment Gateway, Mr. Johnny Wu, Project Management at Hong Leong Bank (Cambodia), and Ms Romny Theam, Regional Branch Managers -at ABA Bank.

On Sunday evening, each team will pitch their ideas to Mr. Glenn Miller a consultant for the banking and finance industries, Mr. Mike Gartner the COO of the Sabay Digital Corporation, Mr. Swapnil DeshmukhHead of Virtual Banking & Payments at Maybank Cambodia, and Mr. Zokhir Rasulov Chief Digital Officer at ABA Bank.

The FinTech scene in Cambodia is known to be one of the fastest growing scenes in terms of interest as well as the capacity that people have in developing FinTech startups.

The FinTech are includes services like money lending, money transfer, capital raising, accounting, investing, asset management, payment, and cyber security.

What is a Startup Weekend?

The purpose of a Startup Weekend is to help everyone who possesses a business idea to build a startup in 54hours. Building a startup is not only about having an idea, it is also about having a strong team and getting advices to make your project more achievable.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same model. Everyone is welcome to pitch a startup idea on the Friday night to receive feedbacks from peers. After this, teams are built around the most viable concepts picked in the participant ideas.
